When Gyros Protein Technologies approached StudioRed to design and engineer their PurePep Chorus Device, they also requested an updated design to their GUI and user experience.

The StudioRed UX Design team visited the client’s site for multiple days to study the process scientist’s use of their biotech devices. As their device is the latest and greatest in the peptide synthesis industry, they needed their software to reflect the same high tech, best in class feel.

Much of the user interface design and many of the screens were created specifically for this device and its technology, but the design is intended to be modified and utilized throughout their whole line of biotech devices.

Gyros Protein now features a one-of-a-kind keyboard, which is used partially for typing, but has various modes for inputting data. While there is one QWERTY Keyboard, there are various other keyboards in which each key represents a scientific process or chemical. Using this unique keyboard allows for a simpler user experience.

Rather than filling the screen with icons users can simply change the keyboard much like one would change a keyboard language. The software design also allows the keyboard to be pulled up in any screen, not just when typing was necessary.

Another innovative UX design update we made was redesigning the menu. Previously, while in the menu, the user had no clue as to where in the synthesis process they were. We changed this so as you move through the processes, you move through the menu sequentially.

The menu was also located on the bottom of the page with improper hierarchy, so in the new user interface design, we followed best hierarchy practice by moving it to the top. As this device has its screen integrated onto the device, instead of on a separate a computer screen, StudioRed’s UX design team had more power to control and integrate the final look and feel of the user interface design.

Previously, Gyros Protein only used text as GUI touch-points, but we wanted to feature unique and distinguishable icons to make it easier for people to quickly recognize the main process buttons. Icons help people choose and remember actions faster than text only does. A new progress bar is now displayed prominently to make status feedback clear to the user. These design features and more were implemented because this software has a lot of information for the user to process.

As a biotech/medical device, we initially expected the software to have a very clean, stark white appearance. However as we were designing the device and software  simultaneously, we found the client’s preferences leaning towards the darker look that the PurePep Chorus device now has, so the software GUI was updated to achieve the cohesive look between the hardware and software and follow their brand language.
