Harris Communications

Harris Communications’ latest ruggedized Android tablet reflects the branded design language we created for their next-gen products. The device is intended to be used by military and first responders including gloved users in various situations.

With defined ergonomics and the Harris branded design language (created at StudioRed) a host of product details and requirements were executed in 3D CAD.

Our engineers worked closely with a leading tablet manufacturer to maintain the design intent while addressing the complexities of submersible covers for all openings and connectors, while minimizing the size to meet component and manufacturing sensitivities.

Rubber grips and bumpers added grip and durability, camera and mics front and rear and easy to swap battery packs that stay secured during field use are just a few.

The team heavily explored the ergonomic layout of the tablet. With the goals of ease of blind use and protecting key switches from accidental activation, the team underwent a series of full size mock up studies. Gloved testing was critical while multiple button matrixes were assessed and sent to industry experts for review.

With defined ergonomics and the Harris branded design language (created at StudioRed) a host of product details and requirements were executed in 3D cad. The final outcome is a compelling look and feel that can perform in any environment.

Five antennas for multiple radios and GPS functionality were hidden in the design yet outside the structural metal enclosure. Modular accessory attachments, and in vehicle mounting was also accommodated.

Full size models and prototypes were provided by StudioRed and rubberized coatings and realistic finishes were implemented for the client to accurately assess the effectiveness of the form and suggest any final edits to create a superior product.
