Token Ring 3 is the result of a close collaboration with the StudioRed team, blending advanced technology with striking design. Equipped with FIDO2-compliant biometric authentication, the ring’s built-in fingerprint sensor ensures only authorized users can access it, safeguarding against phishing and credential theft. Our focus was on achieving both functionality and style, ensuring the ring was compact while maintaining an iconic look. Through the use of cutting-edge metal injection molding and TPU overmolding techniques, we created a ring that’s both ergonomic and visually distinctive. By carefully addressing key challenges, our collaboration delivered a sleek, secure, and user-friendly product that redefines cybersecurity.

Engineering Overview

Finger Sensor

We worked closely with electrical engineers and suppliers to select and integrate a small fingerprint reader with capacitive sensors, ensuring consistent reliability. Additionally, we experimented with capacitive touch bezels that served as an “on” function, optimizing battery efficiency while maintaining performance.

Tight Tolerance Manufacturing

We collaborated closely with manufacturing companies to perfect the use of the Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process for crafting the front half of the ring, while utilizing TPU on the rear with sub-0.5mm thickness walls. The extremely thin walls helped to minimize the ring’s size without compromising durability or functionality.

Charging Contacts

We dedicated significant design efforts to ensure the charging contacts were always properly aligned and securely positioned. A great deal of engineering work was required on the manufacturing side, especially to maintain the correct placement of the contacts during the overmolding on the rear of the ring, which presented unique challenges.
